HUS Innovation and the CleverHealth Network ecosystem organized a side event in connection with the Radical Health Festival on 19 January 2026, where HUS experts presented concrete examples of future healthcare solutions.
The event was opened by HUS Chief Medical Officer Markku Mäkijärvi, who welcomed the participants and reflected on what the word “radical” means in the context of healthcare. The ecosystem’s lead, Virpi Rauta, continued by introducing the CleverHealth Network ecosystem, a unique platform for collaborative projects. The newest projects, AIMO and FecaCaps, are launching at the beginning of the year and will advance innovations in fertility treatments, wet age-related macular degeneration care, interpretation of sprirometry results and capsule-based fecal transplants.
Next, we heard inspiring examples from Development Manager Sami Salmi about soundscape experiments conducted during the construction process of Laakso Hospital, as well as smart sensor solutions supporting patient well-being.
Neurologist Laura Mäkitie presented the UNIFIED EU project led by Erasmus University and the pharmaceutical company Pfizer, in which HUS is participating. The project aims to build a unified framework for, among other things, Parkinson’s disease research and patient-centered outcome measures – with the goal of bringing the patient’s voice and real-life health data more effectively into clinical decisions and medical research.
Development Manager Pekka Kahri, in turn, spoke about the PHEMS EU project led by HUS, which focuses on cross-border data collaboration and enables the secure sharing of anonymized children’s health data to support research and the development of care.
Finally, Clinical Genetics Specialist Kirmo Wartiovaara gave a presentation on how breakthroughs in gene medicine – NGS sequencing, CRISPR-Cas9, and lipid nanoparticles – are opening new doors for the treatment of hereditary diseases.
To conclude the event, Development Manager Tiina Puurtinen thanked the participants for an inspiring afternoon and encouraged continued collaboration in health innovations.
A warm thank you to all speakers and participants. From here, we continue together toward even more impactful health innovations.
Follow the network to stay up to date on upcoming projects!
