The Finnish company Avaintec has 15 years’ experience of healthcare data structures and the use of data in artificial intelligence services, and the company has now joined the CleverHealth Network (CHN) ecosystem. In our interview, CEO Pekka Kuosmanen and data analyst Mikko Järvensivu spoke about the company’s background, objectives and expectations.
Avaintec is renowned for its extensive expertise in healthcare information systems. The company develops AI-powered solutions for predictive care and data-driven management based on data from local and national data repositories and data lakes. These include, amongst other things, integrations with patient information systems, social services and other customer information systems, The company’s AI-powered tools are based, amongst other things, on international classification standards such as RAI (Resident Assessment Instrument) and ICF (International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health). All of the company’s operations are ISO-certified in accordance with standards for information security, quality, and healthcare equipment and software. The company is currently in the process of obtaining certification for two new ISO standards required by the EU’s AI Regulation.
Avaintec’s core operating model is to develop AI tools that do not create new personal data registers within their own cloud service, which facilitates compliance with the GDPR. These AI solutions support various healthcare processes, such as remote care and the assessment of children’s symptoms (ChildScreen), a system for predicting the risk of children and young people being taken into care (CustodyChief), mental health risk prediction (MentalChief) and the assessment of rehabilitation and functional capacity (RehabScreen). The mental health solution is seen as particularly well-suited to CHN’s priority areas. Avaintec also wishes to investigate the use of AI to prevent unplanned repeat treatment episodes in post-operative care.
When we asked Avaintec about its motivation for joining CHN, Pekka Kuosmanen emphasised the critical importance of data in the development of artificial intelligence: “Through CHN, we can analyse a substantial and significant volume of data and identify opportunities for joint clinical research. CHN can also open doors to international collaboration and help us expand our own networks.” Avaintec’s aim is to identify use cases where joint projects can be launched. Avaintec is also prepared to offer data analytics and data algorithm consultancy to CHN’s partners where required. This can generate mutual added value.
Avaintec brings to the network its extensive experience of artificial intelligence projects, in-depth knowledge of data structures in social services and healthcare, and a strong range of cloud services (AI as a SaaS service). One particularly interesting area for further research could relate to medication management, where HUS’s data resources are invaluable.
As a positive outcome of this collaboration, Avaintec hopes to develop two or three new AI assistants for predictive healthcare solutions, which have international export potential and are based on advanced data-driven information systems.
