CNN highlighted the pioneering work of HUS Helsinki University Hospital and CleverHealth Network ecosystem on digital healthcare recently in a documentary “Tomorrow transformed - Connecting to the healthcare of tomorrow”.

The episode discussed AI and the hospital of the future with examples on how HUS is using AI and advanced technologies for the best of patients explained by Taru Hermens, Development manager of AI Head Analysis and Jukka Putaala, Neurologist, Head of Stroke Unit and Senior Clinical Researcher at HUS.

Regarding digital health care one key issue is to be able to utilize the health and wellbeing data for a comprehensive care and also prevention of diseases. The documentary envisions an ideal world where patients, hospitals and doctors would work together exploiting all this data. But in reality doctors still spend a lot of time for mandatory paper work. Digitalization is bringing here a big chance which is not only technological but even more a cultural transformation in healthcare emphasizing the role of patients as active participants in their treatment.

“There are today so massive amounts of data that it is impossible for human only to interpret it all. AI enables utilizing existing data masses for clinical decision making which also can save a lot of time and bring us more time for patients,” Jukka Putaala pointed out.

Taru Hermens added: ” AI has demonstrated its capabilities in predicting outcomes, automating tasks and analyzing medical images, among other applications. However, its is important to emphasize that AI is ultimately the tool designed to assist and support clinical experts. The final decisions in clinical settings are always made by a human being ensuring that patient care remains in the hand of experienced professionals.”

The episode highlighted two CleverHealth Network ecosystem projects Home dialysis and AI Head Analysis. It brought up also the importance of wearable devices which enable both remote care and participation of patients more actively in their care. The project, Home dialysis was highlighted as a prime example of a homecare solution enabling patients to make the dialysis by themselves at home safely, being all the time virtually connected to the EMR. Homedialysis solution shares real time clinical data and dialysis related data between care team and the patient.  Removing constant visits to hospital and clinical routines this kind of solutions, streamlined with AI, improve the quality of life of patients freeing up time of nurses and doctors for quality-based time with patients.

AI Head Analysis project brings an example on image analyzing. AI solution has been developed by HUS and partners for reviewing brain CT scans and detecting brain hemorrhages. The latest findings on this topic will be presented at RSNA Annual Meeting (Radiological Society of North America, 1-5.12.2024) by Cerebrovascular neurosurgeon, Associate Professor Miikka Korja from HUS.
